Think we got all the time in the world
Well you better think again
We got no time to waste today
We got no time to pretend
You are there / I am here
We're separated / By the fear
Screens can't screen the dreams and germs
They're gonna get inside your head
We all got to work together
Or pretty soon we're all gonna be dead
You are there / I am here
We're separated / By the Fear
We're Coming Back!
I gotta say the future's awesome
Everything is A.O.K.
All the work's done by robots
And everyday is Saturday
Future people have jetpacks!
They fly around in flying cars!
There's so much I could tell you
But the coolest part by far...
Everybody gets a kitten!
A new one every single day
Everybody gets a kitten
And you can name it if you want... or just give it away
There's no disease or hunger
Zero poverty or war
Life is just a giant party
And no one here is ever bored
All the factories burn rainbows
You can buy a house on Mars
There's so much I can tell you
But the coolest part by far...
Everybody gets a kitten!
A new one every single day
Everybody gets a kitten
And you can name it if you want... or just give it away
More kittens for you!

Here's the story... While sheltering-at-home in upstate New York, Nick Petropoulos sent Jim McGuinn an embryonic song, urgent riffs and pounding chords, and a note about the separation and distance, and the hope that one day soon… McGuinn loved the song, fleshed out the words and melody, and added another guitar. Next the duo solicited friends, neighbors, and musicians from around the corner and around the globe to join in. Drummer Noah Levy (Brian Setzer) hammered out the beat in his home studio, and McGuinn mixed the pieces together.
“Reaching out to sing was a great reason to connect with so many in the same boat - amazing to hear 30+ voices together,” said McGuinn, "Nick recorded off his NYC apartment balcony - people banging pans at 7pm to pay tribute to the medical workers - that’s the clanging at the start.”
This time The People Between are Jim McGuinn Slusarek (Saint Small), Nick Petropoulos, Noah Levy (Brian Setzer), plus the voices of Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate) and Linda Pitmon (Baseball Project, Scott McCaughey) NY; Stephen Carroll (The Weakerthans) Winnipeg, CA; Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons) London; Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (Trupa Trupa) Gdansk, Poland; Joe Greenwald (Dirtbombs) Austin; Martin Royce (Washington Social Club) Maryland; Richard Jankowski (Big Mother Gig) LA; Jamie Olson (Midnight Singers) Philadelphia; Brett Newski, Milwaukee; John Munson (Semisonic, New Standards), Mark Mallman, Katy Vernon, Dylan Hicks. Eric Oly and Delphia Blaze (Stereomaid), Martin Devaney, Andy Halmaas (Whiskey Rock and Roll Club), Andy Iwanin (Muun Bato), Deke McCallum (The Threat of the Banjo), Joshua Holt, Minnesota. Plus Jim’s Saint Paul, neighbors: Sam Archibald, Andrew, Lindsay, and Edward Farwell, Jason and Holly Overbrook, Paul and Anne Jones, Mary, Vivi, Lucy, and Mimi McCalllum, Andi and Bettie, Becky Hochstein, Clark Koenig, Momo Hawakawa, Kim and Gordie Kokx, Todd Smith, Bryson Hatfield, and Winston the Dog.
Recorded April 2020 by Jim at The Palace and Noah at his new studio above his garage in Saint Paul, and Nick somewhere in upstate NY.
“We’re donating proceeds to two great organizations - City Meals on Wheels NY,” said Petropoulos. “They do amazing work in the best of situations, and their efforts are vital now to help feed the elderly during COVID-19, and to Twin Cities Music Community Trust, supporting the MN scene during this time. Please donate to them, buy this track, or even just listen - all proceeds go to the cause!”

If it were 1966 or 1979, “We’re Coming Back” would come out on a 45, with a perfect b-side, and this single has just that: a punk cover of Jeremy Messersmith’s “Everybody Gets a Kitten,” from his singalong album 11 Obscenely Optimistic Songs For Ukulele. “Like seemingly half the residents of Minnesota, I was doing a Uke selfie video to this when Jeremy put it out a couple years ago, and I realized how close the chords and phrasing were to God Saves the Queen. So I wondered what it might be like to mash that up… with Nick providing the lead guitar, and my best or worst or Rottenest vocal. I know Jeremy won’t sue, hoping Mr. Lydon won’t either, cause I definitely nicked his Vox... with love. Maybe he likes cats?"
